Ending violence against women
UniSA’s Hawke Centre and UNIFEM hosts Police Commissioner Hyde in public forum on violence against women.
In Australia more than 1 million women report they have experienced
violence during a relationship and 60 per cent say they lived in daily
fear during the relationship.
And we know that the problem is both local and global – one in three women worldwide is a victim of violence.
Timed to mark the United Nations International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW) on November 25, Commissioner Hyde will join with Professor Rhonda Sharp, Acting Director of UniSA’s Hawke Research Institute to highlight key issues surrounding violence against women in a public lecture on Wednesday November 24 2004 at 5.15 pm at the Mercury Cinema in Morphett Street, Adelaide.
The lecture, Mending their Wings: Solutions for the prevention of violence against women, is being presented by UNIFEM Australia in conjunction with UniSA’s Hawke Centre.
Director of the Hawke Centre, Elizabeth Ho, says the issue of violence against women is now more clearly everybody’s business because of the enormous impact it has on society.
"The Hawke Centre is pleased to support the United Nations UNIFEM drive on this vital issue," she said.
"Violence against women in its many variations wreaks enormous damage in the community and it is something which is carried over from one generation to the next. We are especially pleased to be able to offer people the opportunity to hear directly from SA Police Commissioner Mal Hyde on local solutions to this global problem."
Ms Ho said it was encouraging to note that on November 25, men all over Australia would be wearing white ribbons to show their support for United Nations International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women.
UNIFEM is the United Nations Development Fund for Women and UNIFEM Informs is a UNIFEM Australia initiative which aims to increase awareness of the role and work undertaken by UNIFEM to the general public.
The Hawke Centre's international patron is Nelson Mandela and the Centre mounts an active public program consistent with its non-partisan agenda of “strengthening our democracy, valuing our cultural diversity and building our future."
