A tribute to Hawke in history

Twenty years since he was first elected Prime Minister of Australia, Bob Hawke is in Adelaide for a week of activities including the launch of a book documenting the Hawke Prime Ministerial era.

The Hawke Government: A Critical Retrospective, edited by Troy Bramston and Susan Ryan is a definitive account of one of Australia's most important reformist governments. According to reviewers the book for the first time puts on record, the candid views of cabinet ministers, political insiders and commentators providing a unique insight into the nature of leadership and the struggles of government

It will be officially launched by Premier Rann at a special tribute function at the University of South Australia on Tuesday September 16 at 6 pm at the City West campus.

Premier Mike Rann will take the opportunity to pay tribute to Bob Hawke, recognising the importance of his leadership, the remarkable legacy of the Hawke era in Australian society, and his continuing international standing and associations.

The book launch and tribute fall in a week of important events for the former Prime Minister, including the Annual Hawke Lecture to be delivered by former government colleague, Gareth Evans, on Thursday evening at the Adelaide Town Hall, and the Famous People, Famous Collections Conference, being hosted this week by the UniSA Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Library.

Director of the Hawke Centre at UniSA, Liz Ho says having been born in SA, Bob Hawke increasingly enjoyed a special relationship with the state through the Hawke Centre and the Prime Ministerial Library and more recently, his work with the Economic Development Board.
