10 year success for management graduates of UniSA TAFE alliance

In a joint partnership forged in SA long before many other institutions were considering equity as an educational issue, in 1993 UniSA and TAFE established a Graduate Certificate in Management program at Adelaide Institute of TAFE under an agreement targeted at helping people to access higher education.

And 10 years on, some of this State’s top professionals who are graduates of the program will be getting together to celebrate the anniversary of a management course that has made a difference.

The celebrations will be held at UniSA’s City West campus, ground floor, Yungondi Building on December 2 from 5 pm – 6.30 pm. Key speakers will include UniSA Vice Chancellor Professor Denise Bradley, Adelaide Institute of TAFE Director Maureen Morton and several of the students who have graduated from the program.

The first intake of students numbered 25 but today about 70 students enter the program each year and a large percentage of them find they want to study further, moving from the graduate certificate to complete a MBA with UniSA’s International Graduate School of Management.

UniSA’s Strategic Partnerships business manager Ross Morriss says the program has proven to be an excellent means for those with significant management experience but no University degree to commence study at a Post Graduate level.

“The program format eases students back into study and importantly adds value to prior learning experiences,” Morriss said.

“The University recognises the value of prior learning in programs such as the Graduate Certificate in Management and students thrive in the program, many of them continuing on to do their MBA and proving to be some of the best students we have.”

Past graduates include Adelaide high achievers such as Laura Fell, meat chicken producer, leading industry body representative at the state and national level and one of the first women to represent the industry in a trade mission to Iraq in the 2002 Oil for Food program mission for SA business; John Doherty ABC’s head of International Operations; Maree Rogers, Human Resources Manager for the Royal District Nursing Association; and Brian Clancey, Director of Legislation and Environment for the Local Government Association.

“The wealth of expertise in this program is so broad that there is enormous benefit for students in sharing that knowledge, supporting each other and networking across industries,” Morris said.

“What the success of the program has shown in the past 10 years is the value of the UniSA TAFE partnership in opening opportunities up for people to engage with education at different stages of their lives to enhance there important contributions to the community.”
