The Bachelor of Sustainable Environments (Geospatial Information Systems)

Who will employ me?

Graduate employment opportunities exist in environmental studies, natural resource and environmental management, land and asset management, sustainable environmental management, and planning and population studies. Employment outcomes are very good and often well paid as graduates of this award will have particularly strong skills in GIS and remote sensing, and thus will gain employment through the application of these skills to a wide variety of employment scenarios.

It is likely that our graduates will gain employment by state government departments such as: Primary Industries and Resources, the Environmental Protection Authority, Environment and Heritage, and Land Water and Biodiversity. Federal Government departments such as Geosciences Australia, Environment and Heritage and Defence would also recruit students from this program. Local Government will employ Environmental Officers with GIS skills to undertake environmental impact assessments and hence graduates of this program will be able to meet this challenge.

As a graduate, you will also be able to find plenty of opportunities within the private sector. Graduates of this degree will find employment within organisations ranging from urban planning consultants, through mapping companies to agricultural and environmental consultants. Companies such Sinclair Knight Merz, Aerometrix and URS Asia Pacific are likely employers.

Professional Recognition

Graduates of this program will be eligible for membership of the Spatial Sciences Institute (SSI), and after a period of employment will be eligible to apply for general certification as a Practising Spatial Scientist. Further study and further work experience may lead to certification as specialist in one of the six commissions of the SSI.

Graduates of the Geospatial Information Systems Award, after appropriate industry experience, will be eligible to undertake a Graduate Diploma in Surveying, which, it is envisaged, will be recognised by the SA and reciprocating Boards of Surveyors and suitable to be registered as a Graduate Surveyor.
