Gaining experience is one of the keys to successfully gaining employment
in your chosen field. Whilst a student, it can be difficult to gain this
experience, however, in the environment field it is invaluable. There
are several ways to gain experience. Become involved in local groups,
such as landcare groups, people who are involved in these groups are a
wealth of knowledge. These groups often undertake projects which you can
be involved in and learn a great deal from, they also look really good
on resumes. Also if time permits, undertake work experience with a
government department, local council or private company in your area of
interest. This may take some effort to organise but it is worth it, it
may even lead to employment. You will gain valuable experience, contacts
and it shows you are proactive about getting a job !!
Another key to successfully gaining employment is to network. Networking
and making contacts in as many government departments, local councils
and the private sector, in your area of interest, is one of the best way
of gaining employment, particularly in Adelaide. Networking ties in well
with gaining experience, many very useful contacts are made through
local groups or meeting people when you are undertaking work experience.
Start this early in your university career and by the time you finish
your degree you will have networks everywhere. By having as many
contacts as possible you will hear about more jobs, people will think of
you when jobs become available and in some cases they may create a
position specifically for you.
