The Bachelor of Sustainable Environments (Biodiversity and Park
Management) award is a practical and recognised degree that has been
designed in consultation with industry experts from throughout
Australia. In an age of economic rationalism, it remains one of the few
University degrees to offer extensive practical field experience, camps,
and small classes. The graduate qualities embedded in all University of
South Australia programs also give you an edge on the competition. By
considering the graduate qualities in their lecture, and practical
workshop development, academics are always reminded of the skills you
need for your future careers and our mandate to provide you with those
skills. When applying for positions, keep in mind the difference that
your UniSA degree offers, and use it as a selling point. In addition
to having a strong theoretical multi-disciplinary background, you have
diverse, in-depth practical experience, ranging from animal handling,
plant propagation, working with diverse audiences and managing
consultation projects.
While you can be confident that your degree will position you well for
your future career, remember your degree is only one component of
getting a job and you need to also differentiate yourself from
your UniSA colleagues. We recommend you try to get as much and as
varied experience as you can while you are at University. Consider
applying for seasonal positions in the University breaks, look into
volunteering for various jobs, consider enrolling for the professional
placement course or take an active role in your student organisations
etc. Build your professional networks. Attend seminars,
workshops, conferences or professional society meetings where you can
talk to people in the industry. Examine the skills that are needed for
the jobs you want and try to set yourself up for them. The various
graduate recruitment programs that state and federal agencies administer
are well worth applying for. Make sure you are aware of the relevant
deadlines (unlike some of us, they don’t give extensions!). When you
do apply for a job, research the organisation, address all selection
criteria, and follow-up, even if you don’t get an interview.
Finding meaningful employment is an important goal to most of you, and
to us. We wish you every success on your quest to find a great job and
build a career. Please let us know if you have ideas on how to improve
this website.
