Making so many wonderful friends that share similar interests to me.
Can you describe your first recruitment process?
There were four people on the interview panel including; one ranger, and one
person from the human resources section. They asked a whole series of
questions including
• Planning Questions: How to plan for the recovery of a threatened species,
• Practical questions: Fixing fences in remote locations
• Personal questions: Initiative, judgement & personal skills/interests.
I think it is very important to anticipate the types of questions you will
be asked for the interview and prepare some answers for the most common
types of questions that you will expect; examples of times you have used
your own initiative or judgement, and remember why you actually want that
specific job! Take the opportunity to go to practise interviews.
What was your first week like in your first job?
In my first week on the job I was involved in inductions, training, and
on-the-job learning. I was given a list of my responsibilities, jobs that I
was expected to perform, and training that I needed. I spent the majority of
the first few months going through numerous training courses, including
Park warden training
4WD training
Defensive driver training
Conflict resolution
Chemical training
Wallaby handling
Radio communications
DEH orientation
CFS basic firefighter training
local plant ID
Visitor data systems training
First aid training
Wildlife permit system training, and the list goes on.
What do you wish you had done at University?
I wish that I had kept better and more organised notes and records, so that
I can refer back to them in my job. If you don't keep track of things you
have done it is very easy to lose track, or even forget what you have
learnt.
I also wish I had done more volunteer work as that is the best way to
network and make contacts in your chosen field so that people know you and
your capabilities.
