Research

The School of Natural and Built Environments researches the relationship between the natural and constructed world, with an emphasis on improving sustainability.

We conduct research in engineering, environmental ecology and geomorphology, building and construction, environmental management, town and community planning, water engineering, park interpretation and management, water sensitive urban design urban biodiversity, transport systems, environmental management and compliance, structural materials, geospatial analysis and a range of related fields.

Our research is multidisciplinary and taking this approach allows students and researchers to work with experts in different fields on complex topics and issues. Our aim is to understand our world, decrease our environmental “footprint” and develop sustainable solutions to environmental, climate change or human activity related problems.

Our research effort is organised into three University funded Research Centres and two Division-supported research groups:

The Barbara Hardy Centre for Sustainable Urban Environments undertakes multidisciplinary topic related research. The topics are: water and sustainable technologies, changing land use patterns, urban biodiversity, education and communication, hazard management and planning for green cities.

The SA Water Centre for Water Management and Reuse has established core capabilities in water and waste water treatment, water reuse, total water cycle management, water sensitive urban design, environmental biotechnology, water utilization from the River Murray and the provision of water services for rural and desert communities.

The ISST - Transport Systems Centre  is an international centre of excellence in transport and logistics offering: Education at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, training through specialist courses tailored to users needs research and development and consulting and expert advisory services.

The two research groups are the ISST - Centre for Building and Planning Studies which undertakes and encourages collaborative research, consultancy, and professional development in construction management, urban and regional planning and related disciplines.
