EcoCents Living: Joint research by Housing SA, Hindmarsh and UniSA puts affordable housing under the spotlight

Dr Stephen Pullen

Identifying housing forms that are affordable as well as sustainable is the main aim of a research project just commencing at the University of South Australia. The project is jointly supported by both government and industry.

Housing SA and the Hindmarsh Group of Companies are keen to identify systems that embody affordability and sustainability and have funded the Centre for Building and Planning Studies at UniSA to carry out this work.

The research seeks innovative housing solutions not previously utilised. It will highlight a greater diversity of housing options that match the changing community profile and promote planning initiatives to facilitate improved affordable and high needs housing supply.

The issues to be canvassed are environmentally sustainability, energy efficiency, sustainable materials, life cycle approaches and innovative procurement and construction methods. The need for adaptability to changing life cycle needs and different target groups is an important issue with this investigation.

The research will apply more directly to medium and high density housing developments in regional and urban cities in proximity to transport nodes. However, the findings may also benefit other forms of housing such as low density or retirement living.
