PhD Opportunities at Mawson Institute
We are currently looking for PhD students for the following position:
Research Focus: Modelling of Drinking Water Treatment
Schools: Mawson Institute/Centre for Water Management and Reuse (NBE)
Research Subject: Modelling of novel and conventional drinking water treatment processes
Summary: This PhD study will investigate the development of models that describe the performance of novel and conventional treatment processes for the supply of drinking water. Modelling approaches may include development of mathematical algorithms that describe chemical and other processes, mechanistically, semi-empirically and/or empirically. Modelling approaches may be process or data driven, with associated statistical analyses used for model optimization. Model development will involve determination of key raw and treated water quality parameters that influence the selection of water treatment technology and influence performances. The study will involve the establishment of the relationships between the water quality parameters and treatment performances. Research will focus on drinking water sources from the Murray River and on its water quality impacted by climate change. The aim of the study will be to develop models that can be practically applied at drinking water treatment plants to treat water of current quality and following changes associated with climate and season impacts. The research will be conducted in collaboration with SA Water Corporation.
Value of research: $26,500; plus operational funds
Citizenship: Australian Citizens (international students are welcome to apply)
Requirements: 1st class Honours/Masters graduates with strong interest in mathematics/statistics, modelling, software development and industry processing. Knowledge of and interest in chemistry and/or water is considered highly desirable. Graduates in Chemical, Civil Engineering or Mathematics / Chemistry disciplines are likely to have a suitable background for this PhD study.
Closing Date: 31/10/2009
