Flow over topography
(V Gaitsgory, S Kravchuk and S Lucas)
For inviscid incompressible fluids, the equations of motion for
two-dimensional and axisymmetric flows can be reduced to a single non-linear
elliptic partial differential equation for a generalised stream function.
Particular examples being investigated are stratified, rotating, and swirling flows. These flows in long thin geometries can be surprisingly complex, and can include regions with a sudden change in the flow pattern.
These flows are being analysed using perturbation techniques and numerical methods.
