Technology in mathematics education

(L Colgan)

Len Colgan, having completed terms as Head of School in mid-1998, has been investigating the use of technology in mathematics education.

This involvement covers innovative and flexible delivery of mathematics at the university as well as devising new syllabi for SSABSA to use for pre-tertiary mathematics for the first decade of the new millennium.

Len was invited to present a paper “MATLAB in First Year Engineering Mathematics” at the ICMI Study Conference “On the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics at University Level” in Singapore in December 1998. Subsequently, an updated version was accepted for publication in the International Journal of Mathematics Education in Science and Technology, 2000, Vol. 31, No. 1, 15-25.

A further refereed presentation, “Integrating MATLAB into Tertiary Mathematics,” was given at the Australasian MATLAB Users' Conference in December 2000.
