About the school

OC BuildingLocated within the Division of Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment (ITEE), the School of Mathematics and Statistics has primary responsibility for the teaching of mathematics and statistics throughout the University of South Australia.

The School offers over 75 courses to students enrolled in a broad range of disciplines including science, engineering, environment, business and health, together spanning three Divisions. In addition, the School offers undergraduate degrees in Mathematical Sciences and Quantitative Finance as well as a Mathematics Honours program and a Masters degree by coursework in Quantitative Finance.

The School is also actively engaged in research and research training through its Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (CIAM), under the umbrella of the Institute for Sustainable Systems and Technologies (ISST). The School is regarded as one of the most active applied mathematics departments in South Australia and is one of the leading departments in Australia. Within the Division of ITEE, the School boasts to being one of the most successful Schools in terms of research grant awards, publications and postgraduate completions, per continuing staff member. In particular, it enjoys a strong record of winning competitive Australian Research Council grants.

External engagement with the community, in particular secondary schools, represents a third important class of the School's activities. A number of our staff members are active in outreach programs promoting the learning of mathematics at primary and secondary schools. Through CIAM the School also provides mathematical and statistical consultancy to the community, business and industry.

Currently, the School comprises approximately 40 members: professors, associate professors, senior lecturers, lecturers, researchers, graduate students, technical and administrative staff. It is located on two campuses: the Mawson Lakes campus (the OC building) and the City West campus (the Yungondi building).
