Hypatia Scholarship for mathematically talented women and the SA Water Hypatia Scholarship
Hypatia lived in Alexandria in Egypt between 370 and 415 AD. Her father,
Theon, was a mathematician. At a time when women were relegated to
child-bearing and home-making, Hypatia's father taught his daughter all he
knew and encouraged her to help him with his teaching and writing. Theon set
up a school for mathematics, and when he died Hypatia took over the running
of the school and the task of teaching. Up to four hundred students could
attend at one time. She taught mathematics and natural philosophy. She is
credited with the authorship of three major treatises on geometry and
algebra and one on astronomy. Among many of her contributions, she is
remembered for a number of famous quotations, including,
"Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than
not to think at all."
Available on application to mathematically talented girls completing their year 12 studies who enrol in either the Bachelor of Quantitative Finance or the Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences.
The Hypatia Scholarship is equivalent to AU$5000.00 in cash (or contribution towards student tuition fees) for the first year of study. The scholarship includes the provision of a shared personal office space and a personal computer within the School, provides vacation employment from second year onwards, opportunities for overseas study and the opportunity to work with other students with an interest in Mathematics.
The SA Water Hypatia Scholarship is awarded to a commencing female student enrolled full time in the Bachelor of Quantitative Finance program on the basis of Year 12 academic merit with a TER of 90 or above. The SA Water Hypatia Scholarship is equivalent to AU$5000.00 in cash (or contribution towards student tuition fees) for the first year of study, with a possibility of AU$5,000.00 payments in the second and third years dependent on satisfactory performance and engagement with SA Water . The scholarship includes the provision of a shared personal office space and a personal computer within the School, provides vacation employment from second year onwards, opportunities for overseas study and the opportunity to work with other students with an interest in Mathematics. The recipient should have an interest in the SA Water Graduate Program, be willing to attend Graduate Program functions at SA Water and be a positive ambassador for the company.
Requirements for applicants
Applications are invited from either individuals or from groups of friends who by studying together for Year 12 developed team spirit and a genuine interest in Mathematics. Applicants are expected to submit their Year 12 record, together with a letter of recommendation from their Mathematics teacher(s) and a short statement describing why this programme suits the applicants' career goals.
Selected applicants will be invited to the University of South Australia for an interview with academic staff and students. Those judged the most suitable for this special programme will be offered places conditional on sufficiently meritorious performance in SACE Stage 2 examinations. The number of successful applicants for the Hypatia Scholarship is usually three per year and for the SA Water Hypatia Scholarship is usually one per year.
Our first Hypatia Scholarship intake was in 1998. See what Amie, Kylie and Melissa are doing now.
