Some success stories of the School of Marketing

Jude Lamb"I participated in the Marketing Project Program as part of my degree at SA Lotteries.  Our project was to investigate all aspects of the easy Play Club.  This involved considerable data analysis and the creation of a structure for future commissioned market research.  The plan that we produced is now being used as the basis for developing the Easy Play Brand.  Taking part in the MPP led me to my current role, so it was pretty valuable!"

Eva Balan"I always knew I wanted to travel and work overseas and studying International Marketing at UniSA has helped me to achieve this goal.

I was selected to take part in the International Marketing Project Program in 2000 where I and a fellow student worked together to develop a comprehensive marketing plan for the South Australian Seafood Industry and conducted market research with potential partners in Los Angeles, Seattle and Vancouver. This gave me the valuable opportunity to turn the theory and concepts I learned in my courses straight into practice.

When I finished my degree I gained a position as market researcher for the Home & Entertainment Division with Microsoft Austria as a result of my degree and the practical experience I had gained while still at university. After this internship I transferred to MSN and after four years in Austria I am now Regional Partner Manager for MSN Central Europe, Middle East and Africa where I have direct responsibility for our activities with partners in South Africa, the Middle East, Turkey and the Czech Republic.

Although I now work in Sales, I believe that the marketing concepts I learned at UniSA can be applied in all situations: understand who our customer is; understand their needs and challenges to improve our offering; conduct research to understand what our competitors are doing and our position in the market; and put the customer at the centre of everything we do.

Gaining the International Marketing degree from UniSA has made all the difference in my career as I have been able to build upon practical experience and solid theoretical concepts to work in an international environment that is both challenging and rewarding."

The School of Marketing has given me the opportunities and support to excel in both my studies and career goals.  I am going to graduate with more than just a degree; I will have the experience of global marketing conferences, event management skills and the fulfilment of developing the Marketing Students' Association."

James Burnett"In today's fast paced, ever-changing business environment, the University of South Australia's Marketing degree has provided me with a fantastic base of knowledge and skills upon which to build a successful career.  An understanding of the principles and application of marketing has been crucial in the success I have had in advertising sales.  The subjects on strategy have been extremely relevant in my role as South Australian Advertising Manager.

The respect the degree holds within the business community is best evidenced by the number of businesses that contact the University direct looking for candidates.  Indeed it was through such an approach that I got my break in advertising sales."

Philip Sims"The Bachelor of Business course provided a thorough learning experience covering all topics needed for a day to day generalist managers role or senior management positions.  The Marketing stream for me focused and explored more the creative opportunity elements and strategic positioning thinking which has been invaluable in adapting our business' products to the changing landscape we compete in and ultimately will drive our future success."

Sophie Davies"A degree in Marketing with Uni of SA gives you the best career building blocks - a combination of confidence in yourself, knowledge of the marketing environment and 'real life' case studies helps prepare you for the challenges of an increasingly demanding business world, where employers are in search of individuals who can provide them significant competitive edge in the market place.  If you are looking for a course that will open your mind to the diverse range of choices you have, then Marketing is for you.

This course gave me the drive to follow my dreams and to make the right decisions for me.  In today's world enough people are sacrificing their dreams for safe jobs that don't capture their spirit - with a degree in Marketing you can work anywhere in the world - in any industry you have passion for.

At City West I learned to be innovative, to challenge perceptions and to have a more international focus - opening my mind to the cultural variances between different peoples of the world.  I learnt to be a far more respectful individual who had the skills and confidence to choose passion over security in making career decisions.

My degree from the School of Marketing at the University of South Australia, combined with my desire to succeed has taken me to 26 different countries, working for world class companies like David Jones and Le Cordon Bleu and for famous people like Barossa icon, Maggie Beer.  I have followed my dreams, and chosen the roles I wanted, in the field of food and wine that I felt so passionate about.

Today I regularly work with and keep in contact with fellow UniSA alumni and I can see the drive and dedication these individuals have to be leaders in their field, to make their mark in today's world and to find entrepreneurial opportunities that take them where they want to go.  Where do you want to go?"

Michal Wasielewski"I did my first degree in International Business in Europe.  After I graduated, I realized I would rather work in marketing.  I learnt about UniSA from my friends, so I flew the world and enrolled at the School of Marketing.  From the very first moment I knew it was a good decision.  I fell in love with the beautiful city of Adelaide - its beaches, cafes and lifestyle.  UniSA was extraordinary as well, so much different from what I knew from Europe.  There was much more personal contact involved between the teacher and the student and they always had time to discuss problems and to guide us so we find the best solutions.  During every course that I took we were asked to apply our knowledge to real business situations, therefore we did a countless number of cases and analysis. It felt like being a marketer and was very motivating.

I came back to Europe and applied to major FMCG companies.  The selection process was very complicated and demanding.  I had to do a lot of cases, tests and analysis.  Fortunately they were not new to me; it felt like being back at UniSA.  At the end of the day three companies offered me a job.  At the moment I am on a Management Trainee Program in Unilever in the Marketing Department.

Real job is different to what you read in textbooks, because every business situation is different.  However there are certain ways of dealing with advertising agencies, preparing market research reports and consumer analysis.  My real life marketing was very similar to what I was taught at UniSA, and I am still having as much fun shooting new TV campaigns as I had putting it down on paper as my final assignment."
