The Marketing Planning Project (MPP)
|
About the MPP
This is the capstone of the Bachelor of Management (Marketing) degree. It is unique in Australia. The MPP gives students a head start in their Marketing career, and consists of an 18 unit full time study period course for selected students who will be required to:
- spend four months working for four days a week in teams of two in an organisation carrying out marketing activities and writing a professional marketing plan, and;
- each week students attend seminars on Monday where they develop their marketing knowledge. Business and marketing professionals explain how to apply marketing in a range of situations.
The MPP has been developed for students who want to work as Marketing professionals and who want a head start in their marketing career. The MPP will make you 'stand out in the crowd' from other Marketing Graduates.
The majority of Marketing projects will focus on Australian markets. However, some projects may involve an international market requiring the student team to visit the overseas market. (Prior to commencing the MPP, students will be asked to indicate if they are interested in a domestic and/or an international project).
Student Comment
"The Marketing Planning Project has helped me to practice and develop the skills and knowledge I have learnt throughout my studies. It was an excellent opportunity to understand and experience the business environment and how an organisation operates. It gave me the chance to learn more about myself and develop communication and networking skills while accumulating contacts and references.
Working on a real marketing problem helped me to understand how to apply all the marketing theory I have learnt. The Marketing Planning Project has increased my confidence in a business environment and given me confidence that I understand the application of marketing theories."
- Jessica Furze, MPP Study Period 2, 2006
"The Marketing Planning Project (MPP) is a unique educational initiative offering undergraduate marketing students the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to solve a 'real world' marketing problem.
Whilst this course is not for the faint-hearted, it is challenging, rewarding, and exciting! The MPP gives you an experience and knowledge edge… a key point of differentiation over other marketing graduates come job hunting time!
Over the length of the course I was pushed well beyond my own comfort boundaries, and at times this resulted in tantrums and tears… but at the end of the project I was able to look my partner in the eye and smile, because not only had we become great friends, but also managed to produce a practical, realistic, and actionable marketing plan for an extremely complex service and organisation!
In my opinion, more university courses should be like the MPP. It forces students to confront and solve business problems through their own resourcefulness and ingenuity.
If you're looking for an easy option, then the MPP is not for you. BUT, if you're looking to push your education-envelope that little bit further and you love the thrill of a challenge, then you simply cannot go past the MPP!"
- Liz Marriott, MPP Semester 2, 2003
Students can apply for the MPP by downloading an application form (PDF 33kb) and submitting it to the School of Marketing. Application forms are also available from the School of Marketing office. Further information can be obtained from the Course Coordinator, Karen Nelson-Field. Students are interviewed for selection. Interviews are undertaken twice a year prior to the commencement of each study period. Students are advised to contact Kathie Guy for information regarding pre-requisites and information about the Program at an early stage in their studies.
The MPP is offered in study period 5, 2009, depending on the number of suitably qualified students and the availability of appropriate projects. (If either of these requirements is not met, the MPP will not be offered.) The MPP must be taken on a full-time and internal basis. It is worth 18.0 units and represents one complete study period of full-time study taken in the final year of the Bachelor of Management (Marketing). It is equivalent to four standard 4.5 unit courses as shown below:
