Experiential Learning

The School of Management encourages all students to undertake experiential learning while studying at UniSA. We aim to not only develop student's knowledge in all aspects of management but to also provide them with practical skills to give them the best start possible in the workplace.
 

Experiential learning can take a number of forms such as Global Experience, student exchange, industry site visits, workplace practicums and/or projects.

Programs which have an experiential learning component are:   

Bachelor of Management

Students may elect to undertake a work placement by enrolling in BUSS 3010 Industry Project 1 (worth 9 units). Industry Project 1 is a field placement project carried out within a company or organisation under academic and industry supervision. A requirement of the placement is the production of a comprehensive report and presentation. Student and supervisor evaluations, including personal critical reflection for the student, are also an important component of the course. Following the completion of BUSS 3010 Industry Project 1, students may also enrol in BUSS 3075 Industry Project 2 (worth 9 units).

Career Management Skills have been embedded throughout the curriculum. Topics covered include: self awareness, industry options, career planning and skills audit.   

Many courses within the Management program require students to apply theory to a real-life case study. Students may also undertake workplace reports on an organisation of their choice. These case studies and reports form a part of each student's assessment.

Students may participate in role plays and debates as part of courses within the Management program. These assist students to develop communication, leadership and group skills. Developing problem solving skills are important elements of the Management program. Students engage in live problem solving activities and evaluate their own problem solving characteristics.

Bachelor of Management (Logistics and Supply Chain Management)    

BUSS 3010 Industry Project 1 (worth 9 units) is a field placement project carried out within a company or organisation under academic and industry supervision. Requirements of the placement include production of a comprehensive report, presentation, student and supervisor evaluations, and personal critical reflection. Following the completion of BUSS 3010 Industry Project 1, students may also enrol in BUSS 3075 Industry Project 2 (worth 9 units).

Logistics and Supply Chain Management students will have the opportunity to participate in visits to industry associations and businesses. Students will engage in discussions and web based reports regarding business operations.

Many courses within the Logistics and Supply Chain Management program require students to apply theory to a real-life case study. Students may also undertake workplace reports on an organisation of their choice. These case studies and reports form a part of each student's assessment.

Students may participate in debates as part of courses within the program. These assist students with developing communication, leadership and group skills.

Bachelor of Management (Human Resource Management)

ENVT 2002 Management Practicum 1 is a field placement project carried out within a company or organisation under academic and industry supervision. Requirements of the placement include production of a comprehensive report, presentation, student and supervisor evaluations, and personal critical reflection.

Career Management Skills have been embedded throughout the curriculum. Topics covered include: self awareness, industry options, skills audit, interview techniques and career decision making. Workplace investigation A workplace investigation and report forms part of the assessment for the occupational health and safety component of the program.

Many courses within the Human Resource Management program require students to apply theory to a real-life case study. Students work in groups to analyse case studies on real-life scenarios.

Optional field trips Students may participate in field trips to human resource-related bodies, such as the Industrial Relations Court. Professional Recognition

The Bachelor of Management (Human Resource Management) is the only HR degree in South Australia to be accredited by the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI).

Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management   

ENVT 2002 Management Practicum 1 is a field placement project carried out within a company or organisation under academic and industry supervision. Requirements of the placement include production of a comprehensive report, presentation, student and supervisor evaluations, and personal critical reflection.

ENVT 3001 Management Practicum 2 can be completed within South Australia, interstate or overseas. Assessment requires students to submit a report and present it to a panel of academics and staff from the host organisation. Placements can be negotiated with either school or student industry contacts.

Career Management Skills within curriculum Career Management Skills have been embedded throughout the curriculum. Topics covered include: mock interviews, networking and self marketing.

Event programming Students work in groups to plan, implement and evaluate an event for a host organisation. Many courses within the Sport and Recreation Management program require students to apply theory to a real-life case study. Students work individually or in groups to analyse case studies on real-life scenarios.

Students may participate in field trips to sport and recreation facilities and organisations. 

Bachelor of Tourism and Event Management

ENVT 2002 Management Practicum 1 is a field placement project carried out within a company or organisation under academic and industry supervision. Requirements of the placement include production of a comprehensive report, presentation, student and supervisor evaluations, and personal critical reflection.

Career Management Skills have been embedded throughout the curriculum. Topics covered include: job search skills and self marketing. Seminars focused on career management are held as part of the following courses: Understanding Travel and Tourism, Foundations of Event Management and Managing the Hospitality Experience.

Guest industry speakers often present as guest lecturers within Tourism and Events courses. Students will have the opportunity to speak with industry members.

Many courses within the Tourism and Event Management program require students to apply theory to a real-life case study. Students may also undertake workplace reports on an organisation of their choice. These case studies and reports form a part of each student's assessment.

 Students may participate in optional field trips to tourism and event-related organisations.     

Master of Management

Students completing the Management specialisation are required to complete BUSS 5368 Action Learning Project. Students completing one of the other specialisations are able to complete this course as an elective option.

Master of International Hospitality Management

All students completing the Le Cordon Bleu Master of International Hospitality Management program are required to complete BUSS 5369 Hospitality Industry Experience.

Spanning a six month period, it takes place within organisations that are operating within the hospitality industry and provides students with the opportunity to put their learning into practice. In this course, students are exposed to the hospitality industry through the process of undertaking structured, practical experience within the industry, its operations, customers and staff. As such they are able to apply and consolidate knowledge gained in their studies to real life situations in the work environment.

Executive Partner Program (EEP)

The Executive Partner Program (EPP) Mentoring Scheme is free to eligible students. Access to this highly sought mentoring programme is via a competitive selection process.  Students who have attained a GPA of 5.0 or above are invited to apply to be part of the EPP mentoring scheme.  

Initially this will be offered to postgraduate students in the School of Management and may extend to undergraduate students in the future.
