UniSA
Why did you choose to study human Resource Management at UniSA?
I chose UniSA because at the time it was the only one with an HR degree. I originally considered a Certificate IV in Workplace Assessment and Training. This would have taken about three months through a registered training organisation. But instead I chose to do a generalist HR degree, so that I could learn about other aspects of it.

What mode of study did you choose?
I studied full-time, worked part-time and had a mortgage as well.

Are you happy that you chose the degree?
I'm so glad I chose the degree because I would have pigeonholed myself if I had chosen the certificate. This way I have a lot of different options. I love HR management, so it was a really good choice for me.

Did you participate in any field placements, work experience, industry projects, etc as part of your study? How did these experiences benefit you?
No I didn't need to do a practicum as I already had hands on experience through my work. But if I didn't have the d'VineRipe job, I would have chosen to complete a HR practicum.

Did you complete any majors or minors within your program?
I wanted to get maximum exposure to the various HR electives; therefore I chose to do a minor (five courses) in Adult and Workplace Learning. Completing a minor enabled me to specialise in an area I was interested in, while still giving me enough room to choose other electives.

How did you find UniSA teaching staff (eg, industry experts, supportive, helpful, etc)?
I liked everyone who I came into contact with. I can talk as well from an education perspective because my electives were in that area. My partner and I had a family tragedy in 2008 and I thought about withdrawing. The staff were so supportive and lenient with due dates that I continued my studies.

Career
How has the program helped you with your career?
It has launched my career in Human Resources. I managed to get a really good job halfway through my final year and I am still there. I work for d'VineRipe, an agribusiness which has the largest Australian glasshouse built in one stage.  During winter, there are about 75 employees and during summer, this expands to around 150.

What is your current role like?
I report to the General Manager and look after all of the functions. I am the only HR person at d'VineRipe. I love the opportunity that has been given to me. It is quite general and also includes a lot of system development and some occupational health and safety.

What role would you like to pursue in the future?
I'd love to get into HR Management. At the moment, I am getting a lot of experience in all areas of HR, which should help me to achieve this in the future.
