Styles of referencing
Referencing styles vary according to different disciplines or fields of study. Use the style your lecturer recommends and use it consistently.
Author date styles
These include the author name and the date in the text:

- The Harvard style (online workshop)
- Questions? Use the Harvard style discussion forum
- The American Psychological Association (APA) style is used in various disciplines, in particular psychology.
- The Modern Language Association (MLA) is used in humanities disciplines. (PDF 97kb - download Adobe Acrobat. This document is courtesy of the University of Queensland.)
- The Australian Journal of Physiotherapy (AJP) (PDF 420kb - download Adobe Acrobat) style is used by physiotherapy.
Numerical styles
These styles use a number in the text to refer to a source:
- The Chicago or Turabian style (link courtesy University of Wisconsin-Madison Writing centre) is used by art and humanities.
- The Footnote style (Documentary Note System) is used by the School of Architecture & Law. This resource is being updated and it will be republished prior to Study Period 2, 2010.
