What is an online quiz?

Many programs that are offered use online quizzes. These are sets of questions that can take a variety of forms and may be designed for a number of purposes:

How to use an online quiz

If you are required to complete an online quiz, you will find it listed under the heading Learning resources for this course on the course home page in the University’s web site.

Click on the quiz name. At this point you may be required to enter your User name and password. Remember to include your domain name and a forward slash before your username (eg students/fgrd002).

quiz entry screen

If you are enrolled in the course you will normally be taken to a screen similar to the one shown above.

The screen indicates that the quiz is being assembled from a bank of available questions. To start the quiz press the Start quiz button. In some course quizzes, you can repeat the same quiz and get a different set of questions each time.

There are several different types of quiz questions (Multiple choice, Multiple response, Fill in the blanks, True False, Match or Label and arrange in order) which are explained in detail below. However ,the process to answer them is similar in each.

You will taken to a feedback screen and informed if your answer was correct or incorrect. Feedback or suggestions are provided. You will also be given a status report on how many questions are in the quiz you are doing and how many you have already attempted.

How to respond to specific quiz question types

Each different type of online quiz requires a different kind of response from you.

Multiple choice is a common form of online quiz. In these you are given a question and a list of several answers to choose from, as in the example:

To respond to this type of question, you click on the circle adjacent to the answer you consider to be most correct.

You can then check your answer by clicking on the Check button.

(You will find guidelines that you can apply to answering various types of quiz questions in the online guide Succeeding in exams.

Multiple response quizzes are very similar to multiple choice quizzes except that more than one answer may be correct. They will look just like a multiple choice quiz (except for the square check boxes instead of circles) and it is important to read the instructions carefully to see whether one or more choices are required. An example of a multiple response quiz is shown.

To respond, you click on the boxes beside as many answers as you consider being correct and then click on the Check button to check your answer.

Fill in the blanks quizzes require you to insert the appropriate word(s) into a given statement. Each question will look something like the example.

You will be required to click in each box and insert the appropriate word(s) in the space. You can then click on the Check button to check your answer.

True false questions provide you with a statement and ask you to decide whether that statement is true or false. Quizzes of this kind look something like the example.

To complete this type of quiz question, you decide whether you think the answer is true or false then click in the appropriate button. You can check your answer by clicking on the Check button.

Match or label quizzes require you to identify parts ofa diagram or figure. You will usually be given a diagram of some kind and asked to match the letters on the diagram with the correct label from a list of possibilities. A question of this type is shown.

As with all types of quiz questions you will need to follow the directions. In the example shown above you would place your cursor on the ‘pull-down’ arrow beside the word in the box. A list of choices will then be displayed. You would then click on your chosen answer. You can check your answers by clicking on the Check button.

Arrange in order quiz questions require you to arrange a list of items. In this kind of question, you are given a list of items and are asked to sort them into a certain order. An example is shown.

To move an item in the list you click on the item and use the arrows to move it around. You can check your answer by clicking on the Check button.

Insert an answer quizzes requires you to key in your response to a given question. Here is an example.

insert an answer question

You enter your answer in the box provided and check it by clicking on the Check button. There is one problem with this type of question and that is if you have spelled a word incorrectly or made some other type of typographical error, the computer will interpret you answer as incorrect. So if you think your answer is correct, check the spelling, wording and punctuation and try again.

Online quizzes can help guide your study and check your progress, so it is a good idea to make use of them if they are provided for you.
