UniSA Online Discussion Groups

What is an online discussion?

Many courses and resources that are offered online have a discussion group. This facility gives you the opportunity to have a discussion with your lecturer(s) and other students electronically.

It is important that you have the technical knowledge to ‘log on’ and use a discussion list. If you are not sure how to log on, see the Overview leaflet in the series Using the University’s computing environment. It is also important that you know how to participate and make a contribution to the discussion. Discussion groups can be called discussion lists, electronic conferences, computer conferences, chat rooms or just discussions.

The discussion groups used in UniSAnet (where your course and program information are located) are asynchronous threaded discussion groups. This means that participants contribute at any time—they don’t need all to be online at the same time.

As a participant you ‘post’ a message by typing in the Message Box. This message is stored on a server (a university computer with memory space dedicated to the course).

A discussion within a course is password protected and only other members of your group can access the messages. They can then ‘post’ a reply, which will appear on the list under the message they’re replying to. This format of messages allows you to follow the thread or progression of the discussion.

Why participate?

Online discussions provide an opportunity to learn collaboratively with others. You may be required to participate in an online discussion as part of your course requirements. By exploring ideas with others you can enhance your knowledge and understanding and develop your communication and critical thinking skills. You can also get to know others students in your course and discuss common issues with them.
