International students: Education for your children

Generally members of your immediate family (husband or wife and unmarried dependent children under 18 years of age) may accompany you to Australia for the duration of your studies. If you have children aged between 5 and 18 years you will be required to show that you have made suitable arrangements for their education in South Australia.

Tuition fees

Higher Degree Research Students:

The State Government has waived the education fees (including tuition and administration fess) for dependents of international Higher Degree Research (HDR) university students who are on a scholarship organised by their home country government. This fee waiver does not apply to dependents of international students who are studying a postgraduate program by coursework.

For more information about the State Government's fee waiver for dependents of HDR students please visit the Department of Education and Children's Services website.

Undergraduate and postgraduate International Students studying by coursework:

The fees for dependants of all other international students will depend on the children's year level and whether the parent is on a Australian Federal Government Scholarship.

As a parent you will need to complete the Dependant application form for each child and forward it to the International Education Services, South Australian Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS) with a copy of your Confirmation of Enrolment to the University or your Visa for entry to Australia.  If you are on an Australian Federal Government Scholarship, a copy of these documents will also be required.

Please refer to fees and term dates for further information.

Entry fees:

Administration and Support Services Fee (payable first year only) AUD $500
Annual Support Services fee (payable subsequent years only) AUD $300

If you are on an Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) scholarship, you will be exempt from paying the International fee, but will still be required to pay the local school fee of AUD$200  - AUD$900 per year depending on the school.

If an international fee is payable, then this will need to be paid before the student can commence school. When you make your payment please advise DECS of the name of the school the children are attending so that DECS can then forward the fees onto the school.
