Majors, Sub-majors & Minors

A number of degrees at the University of South Australia have provision for majors, sub-majors and/or minors to be taken as part of an award. Below is a list of these majors, sub-majors and minors.

Majors, Sub-majors & Minors

Terminology
Minor

A stream of related courses which comprises up to 18 units (commonly four courses). In some programs these may also be called cognates.

Sub-major

A stream of related courses which comprises between 19 and 35 units (commonly six courses). In some programs these may also be called general studies sub-majors.

Major

A stream of related courses which comprises 36 units (commonly eight courses). May also be called professional majors.

Extended major

A stream of related courses which comprises over 36 units, (commonly 54 units, 12 courses).

Please note:
  • Some majors, sub-majors and minors require the completion of relevant SACE or equivalent courses, or previous or concurrent enrolment in other University courses
  • Some majors, sub-majors and minors have limited places
  • The details listed here are subject to change
  • Not all courses are available every year
