Entry and Application

Trimester model

Law at UniSA is taught over 3 trimesters per year rather than the normal 2 semesters. Each trimester is 10 weeks duration. This trimester model allows students to finish their law degree quicker than their peers at other South Australian universities.

Students can apply for entry into the Bachelor of Laws or Laws Double Degree at any one of three points throughout the year. The trimester commencement dates are as follows:

  • Trimester 1 - February
  • Trimester 2 - June
  • Trimester 3 - September

    Entry requirements

The entry requirements for the Bachelor of Laws for trimester 1, 2011 was an ATAR of 90.2 and a competitive GPA (Grade Point Average).  These should be used as a guide only and are subject to demand.

There are no prerequisites for the Bachelor of Laws.  However, double degree applicants should check the program information for their second degree to determine any prerequisites for that program.

    Credit

Credit will be closely assessed on a case by case basis.  Applications for credit can be made once a student is accepted into the program.

Students with a previous university degree may apply for credit for up to 8 courses. Students entering the Law Double Degree may be eligible for additional credit in the second degree.

To apply for credit please fill out the Credit Application Form (48kb - PDF).  Please note: This form is only for students who have been accepted into a UniSA program.

    Entry pathways

There are a number of pathways into a Laws program.  Please see below for the application process for your current situation.

    School leaver

If you have completed SACE (or equivalent) and you have never studied at higher education level you may apply as a school leaver, based on your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

If you have studied at higher education level for two or less years in a field other than Law, you are still eligible to apply based on your ATAR.

If, however you have studied at higher education level for more than two years, or for more than one year in the field of Law, you are not eligible to apply as a school leaver and should apply based on the STAT test (if your study was not within the past 2 years) or your higher education level results.

Applications for trimester 1 should be made through SATAC, and applications for trimester 2 or 3 should be made through UniSA's Apply Online. The application process applies as follows:

Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:

Special Entry (includes TAFE or Adult entry students)

To enter via this pathway you must complete the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).  To be eligible to sit the STAT you must:

    a. be 18 years of age or over before 1 February; and
    b. not have been enrolled in a course leading to a higher education level award in the previous two years.

For more information about the STAT including fees, application forms and dates visit SATAC.

Applications can be made through SATAC for trimester 1, or Apply Online for trimester 2 or 3 and will be based on your STAT test results.

    Tertiary transfer

If you are currently enrolled in study at another university you should apply for a tertiary transfer.

Students who have completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution will be required to have a competitive Grade Point Average (GPA).

Students who have or are currently studying a Bachelor of Laws degree at another tertiary institution will be eligible for the UniSA program on a case by case basis. Some credit may apply.  We recommend students contact us for further information.

Applications will need to be made through SATAC for trimester 1, or Apply Online for trimester 2 or 3.

    Internal transfer

Current UniSA students wishing to change their degree or combine it with Law should apply for an internal transfer.

Students who have completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at UniSA will be required to have a competitive Grade Point Average (GPA).

Completed applications for internal program transfer should be received by Campus Central by the closing date. Download the Internal Transfer between Programs form.  Some credit may apply.

    Graduate entry

Graduates are eligible to apply for the Law programs.

Applications should be made through SATAC for trimester 1, or Apply Online for trimester 2 or 3.  Students who have previous tertiary studies will be assessed on their Grade Point Average (GPA).

Where a student seeks admission to the single degree in Law (DBLA), and has completed an undergraduate degree from a recognised tertiary institution, the student may be granted credit not exceeding 36 points (8 courses) towards the DBLA. However, all compulsory courses of the DBLA must be completed.  Credit will be awarded on a case by case basis.  Applications for credit can be made once the student is accepted into the program.

The DBLA degree involves 32 courses, of which 18 are compulsory courses. Thus a graduate entering the DBLA must complete 18 compulsory Law courses and 6 non-compulsory Law courses (assuming the maximum credit of 8 courses is awarded). A student seeking admission to practice will need to include the 3 professional admission courses: Civil Procedure, Evidence and Professional Conduct.

If you would like further information about possible credit please contact us.
