PhD in Law

Please explain your research project

I am working under the supervision of Professor Rick Sarre and Associate Professor Dr Julia Davis. I have a keen interest in cyberspace law which is a dynamic, rapidly developing relatively new area of law. There is a great demand for further research into a range of cyber crime issues both in Australia and in other developed countries.

The focus of my thesis is cyber-bullying and its relationship to the criminal law. The dissertation will aim to demonstrate what cyberbullying is, when a state could justifiably regulate this conduct via criminal law provisions, which forms of cyberbullying could justifiably be regulated in this manner and considers possible policy responses to cyberbullying in the South Australian criminal justice system.

Although the emphasis of the thesis will consider this threat in relation to children, I also propose to examine the need to address the issue in relation to adults, in particular teachers. As a PhD is an organic academic work in progress, it is likely that other questions will be analysed throughout the journey.

Why did you choose to study a PhD?

My reason for undertaking a PhD is to make a significant contribution to the academic literature in the area of cybercrime. My litigation experience as a solicitor advocating for the protection of children complements aspects of my research thesis. I consider my candidature an exciting opportunity to specialize in a field I am passionate about, whilst developing academic and research skills of the highest standard.

PhD in Business and Management

Please explain your research project

I am currently working with Professor Vicki Waye and Associate Professor Wendy Lacey on research on Chinese food (beverage) regulation. The research mainly discusses the institutional framework of the Chinese general food regulation (e.g. government regulators, general food policy and laws) and the technical aspects of the Chinese food industry regulation (e.g. labelling, international food trade, food recall). In above so doing, the research seeks to analyse the further integration of Chinese food regulation in the context of relevant international experiences.

The project will conduct an analysis of both Chinese food regulation at the policy level and specific legislation within an international context to elicit proposals for further consolidation aimed at improving Chinese food regulation. The research aims to stimulate both the policy makers and the food industry to rethink and act. Both food regulators and food industries are the main players within food regulation and thus the core actors to be examined in this research. Food industries, e.g., wine, dairy and/or meat shall be analysed in case studies to apply the theoretical framework to real situations.

Why did you choose to study a PhD?

To undertake a PhD is a long and lonely academic march, so you must be motivated and really determined to adhere to your ambition.

After several years' work in hospitality as a tour guide and consultant, my ambitions in exploring the world are expanded through academic adventure; I want to have a glass of wine while reading and brainstorming ...South Australia is the destination embracing my determination so I went for it, simply like that! I love cooking and ...it is not surprising that food is (in my mind) a topic for life and joy.
