Background
Bill Skinner completed his PhD while lecturing in Applied Physics at RMIT. He then jointed the Australian Antarctic Division working as a Field Glaciologist with the Ice Core Drilling Program over a period of two years. He joined
The Wark in 1992 working on the surface chemistry and physics of minerals and materials.

Surface modification of materials including plasma surface modification;
Bioactive materials and surface layers;
Application and development of surface and analytical techniques in minerals and materials processing, surface modification, activation processes, particles and powders, thin films, L-B films and self assembled monolayers, forensic and environmental science, biological systems;
Surface and near surface analytical techniques - X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and synchrotron radiation XPS (SR-XPS), scanning Auger microscopy (SAM), secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).
