A joint workshop under the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund
project - Fluid Flow and Lubrication at the Nanometre Scale - was
organised by the Ian Wark Research Institute in October 2008, under the
title “Microfluidic Design and Device Fabrication”. Three of our
collaborators from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore were
invited to attend the workshop and a further 21 (including 7 PhD
students) attended from The Wark. One visiting scientist from The
Netherlands also attended.
On the first day of the workshop, eleven presentations were made, 3 from
IISc and 8 from The Wark, with time allowed for discussion after the
talks. Further discussions amongst the participants, and in particular
the nominated researchers on the project, were held on the second and
third days. Presentations made on 22 October included overviews of
recent research in friction, microfluidic flow, molecular and
mathematical modelling, wetting, flow in capillaries and porous media,
and a look ahead to the microfluidic fabrication facilities currently
under construction at The Wark.
