Funding for new Australian Mineral Science Research Institute

grinding millThe South Australian State Government has provided $2.5 million for the Ian Wark Research Institute to set up a headquarters for the Australian Mineral Science Research Institute (AMSRI) at Mawson Lakes. AMSRI, led by Wark Director, John Ralston, will conduct research into major technical challenges facing the global mining industry over the next 25 years.

The Australian Mineral Science Research Institute will be made up of three ARC Special Research Centres - located at UniSA, Ian Wark Research Institute (Particle and Material Interfaces), University of Melbourne (Particulate Fluids Processing) and University of Newcastle (Multiphase Processes) along with one of the world's best engineering centres (Julius Krutschnitt Mineral Research Centre) at the University of Queensland.

The funding will provide for vital establishment costs, such as laboratory refurbishments, equipment and maintenance. The Australian Mineral Science Research Institute's partners include BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto Ltd, Anglo Platinum Ltd and other companies who have already committed $7.5 million to it through AMIRA International.
