A joint initiative, led by The Wark, the mini pilot plant was installed and commissioned during August and September 2006. The $1 million facility was funded by UniSA and the Premier's Science and Research Fund and was supported by Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and WMC Resources.
Due to its small scale, the plant will be a unique development to Australia, allowing a degree of control and flexibility that would be impossible with conventional (large) pilot plants. The mini pilot plant located at The Wark, is the only one of its type in Australia and will enable testing and evaluation of new separation processes for a wide range of mineral commodities, using very small sample sizes. This technology is also applicable to non-mineral industries.
