Director's overview
The
Ian Wark Research Institute provides an environment conducive to groundbreaking scientific research.
From a solid foundation in 1994, a group of scientists joined together to
help solve problems in industry and society. In the spirit of that beginning
we see The Wark of today; growing in status, capacity and complexity, yet
the spirit of collaborative endeavour remains.
We focus on both fundamental research and real-world applications. It's the ability to explore new realms to create knowledge, and then turn those ideas into effective industrial outcomes. That is our distinguishing feature.
With an open structure, we seek to break down many of the boundaries commonly surrounding research. By minimising and bridging the divisions between pure and applied research, the university environment and industry, and the multiple disciplines of science, we enjoy a unique research environment. Industries find people they can work with, to develop established ideas and processes or to innovate.
At the centre of The Wark are the staff and students, who have joined us from around the world. We educate our students by integrating them into multidisciplinary research teams. They work alongside some of the world's best researchers and often further their career with our industry research partners or in key research institutions in Australia or overseas.
