  1. Week 1: Welcome and induction of student at first week of student arrival by supervisor and research coordinator
  2. Week 2-6: Allow student 2-6 weeks settling-in time, during which period student will be allocated office space, a computer, uni log on computer access, library, printing and photocopying facilities
  3. Week 6-10: Meeting between student and supervisor(s) to discuss broad areas of research within the Centre and also to consider students interest. Following this meeting student is requested to conduct a preliminary literature search and prepare a discussion paper. Student-Supervisor meeting, discussion and planning about the research proposal. Supervisor advises the student how best to prepare the literature search including its relevance to the proposed research.
  4. 3-6 months: Developing research proposal- Draft proposal ready at about 4 months. Student constantly works with supervisor(s) and prepares the proposal. During this period student has regular meetings (on a weekly basis) with the supervisor.
  5. Student presents a seminar about his/her proposed research to staff and students of the centre
  6. When the principal research supervisor approves the proposal, it is forwarded to research degree coordinator (RDC) for review.
  7. Once RDC approves then is forwarded to Division Dean, Research Education.

In terms of assessing the research proposal, a considerable reliance is placed on the expert knowledge of the principal research supervisor in deciding whether the proposal is sound, achievable within the time frame of 3 years and ready to be lodged. The role of RDC is more of a facilitator and ensures the proposal is submitted in time. The RDC examines the proposal which may include discussion with student and supervisor depending on the necessity.
