Ph.D. students will be required to undergo a formal interview prior to acceptance. This interview will incorporate the request for an on the spot written summary of a previous project (undergraduate, honours, masters etc).
Welcome and induction of student when they first arrive by the RDC and supervisors. The student is allocated office space, photocopying, library and computer access. The various pathways for aid are explained.
Around 4 to 5 months into candidature, the student will submit the research proposal to their supervisor. Feedback will be given for alteration of the proposal if necessary.
Once the supervisor has approved the proposal, the student will submit it to the Research Coordinator. The Research Coordinator will examine the proposal. This examination usually includes discussion with the student and the supervisor. If necessary, revisions are recommended. Both the original proposal and the proposal subsequent to editing will be supplied to the RDC and kept on record.
The final version of proposal will be signed off by the supervisor and research coordinator before the proposal is forwarded to the Research Office.
The Research student is required to present and defend their proposal to an audience of staff and students during their first year as a part of the annual review process. The student’s performance will be audited by the Supervisor, RDC, Director and one further staff member of ACeSSS. If performance is inadequate it may be recommended that the degree is downgraded from Ph.D. to M.Sc. or candidature is discontinued.
