Dean of Research assists Heads of School and leaders of research groups and centres with
research development planning in their areas of responsibility, including
the provision of academic leadership in research and the development of a
strong research culture within the Division.
The role encompasses quality assurance, encouragement of inter-school and inter-disciplinary developments and the provision of advice and support to academic staff on research matters.

Development of University and Division research policies

Chair the Division’s Research Management Committee

Membership of the University’s Research Policy Committee

Development of the Division’s strategic approach to research, including support facilities (e.g. grant writing, mentoring), development/ facilitation of thematic areas/ priorities (including working with the Dean: Research Education in the recruitment of students/ supervisors into areas of strength)

Making recommendations for grant and reward schemes in the Division and monitoring their implementation

Coordination of the use of Division Research Performance Funds

Monitoring the performance of research centres

Planning and review activities, as they relate to the Division’s overall strategic approach to research (in conjunction with the Dean: Research Education)

Dean of Research Education provides a coordinated approach to the support of research education, focussing on the following:

Coordination of School Research Degree Coordinators

Implementation of the Research Training Scheme in the Division

Monitoring annual progress reports submitted by research students and their supervisors

Induction programs for candidates and supervisors

Development of supervision capacity, including supervisor induction, professional development, resource development and mentoring of both local and adjunct supervisors

Membership of the University’s Research Degrees Committee and Examinations Panel and the Division Research Management Committee

Planning and review activities, as they relate to research degree education, administration and management
-
Conformance with Division and University policies for research training and resource allocation

Contribution to the development of University and Division policy

Monitoring of supervisors in conjunction with Heads of Schools

Examination arrangements

Monitoring ethics approvals and leading the Division’s contribution to debate about ethics policies and their implementation

Maintaining close liaison with the Dean of Graduate Studies and relevant staff in other Universities
