History

Support services for Indigenous students commenced in the mid-1970s. At that time, there were barely ten graduates in the state, but with support services at the Institute of Technology, at Underdale campus and at off-campus study centres, graduate numbers reached one hundred by 1985 and three hundred by 1992. Support programs begun at Salisbury and Magill campuses in the mid-1980s and by the early 1990s, the other universities had also set up support services. Annual graduate numbers exceeded fifty throughout the nineties and by 2003, total graduate numbers exceeded one thousand. By the year 2010, Indigenous graduate numbers could exceed two thousand in South Australia, and twenty five thousand across the country.

The Indigenous Student Services has evolved over time to become the thriving centre of excellence that it is today.
