What is Email Redirection?

Email redirection is a facility that allows a person to have an automatic redirection of email from one email account to another. Having a redirection in place allows other users to send email to your University student mailbox, and then have the email redirected to a nominated account.

The University of South Australia now has a web application that allows students that are enrolled in specific courses to nominate an alternative email account that will receive all emails that were intended for your University student mailbox. Students that are eligible can apply an email redirection, remove an email redirection, or modify an existing redirection within the application.

Why would I want Email Redirection?

Email redirection may be a useful facility if you have email accounts other than your University student mailbox.

For example, you may wish to have all of your student email forwarded to a business email address if you are working while studying, or having your email forwarded to an external personal account (eg Hotmail) while travelling overseas.

Things to be aware of

Prior to setting up your email redirection, you must have logged into your University mailbox at least once in the past for this service to work.

It may also take up to 15 minutes before the email redirection will come into affect.

Once you have set up your alternate email account:

you will need to know the full Internet address for people in the University because you will not have easy access to the University Address Book
you may not be able to send to some University mailing lists because they may be restricted to University email accounts
you will not have access to public folders
you will not have access to the calendar features of University email.

You should also be aware that:

redirecting email to your work email facilities may result in breach of your employment contract or workplace policies, therefore it is your responsibility to ensure that redirection to your work email is permitted by your employer
email attachments or content may not be accepted by your redirected email service because there may be different limits on message sizes, mailbox size or type of attachments allowed compared to the University limits (eg Hotmail)
redirected email will not be kept in your University email mailbox
if you remove an existing email redirection, new emails will begin to collate in your University email Inbox.

The University of South Australia does not accept responsibility for any loss or damage arising out of or in connection with your usage of this facility, including but not limited to any loss of information as a result of improper redirection email address or the failure of third party email facilities or the rejection of redirected emails by third party email facilities.
