Internet Access Change Request
In order to better protect machines on the University network from malicious activity and minimise any consequences of internal machines being infected (participating in DDoS attacks, sending confidential info outside the Uni, etc) direct Internet access will be provided only for those particular ports and protocols required for a legitimate service to function. This represents a tightening of access rules over the previous practise of allowing direct access on a wide range of ports by requesting a completely "unblocked" IP address.
No further requests for completely unblocked IP addresses will be processed. Any such requests will be redirected to this web page.
Requests for direct Internet access can only be made by the IT-Support person for a Division, School or Unit and should be made on the form provided here:
Internet Access Policy Change Application (pdf form, 73kb)
NOTE: This form can only be saved when using Adobe Acrobat rather than Adobe Reader. If you do not have a licensed copy of Adobe Acrobat and wish to submit the form electronically, please use the Microsoft Word Internet Access Policy Change Application form.
Those schools or units that do not have any IT support at all must submit a request via the Help Desk with their HoS or Unit Manager's approval.
Where requests are made for access profiles that are common within the University (eg. WebServers, Scifinder client, etc.) and there are already rules setup to handle that access then turnaround of requests should be 5 business days from the receipt of the form.
Requests that entail the creation of new rules may take longer. There will be a need for testing and adjustment of the rules which we will co-ordinate with the requestor. This process could delay the required access.
You need to ensure that where possible you allow time for these processes to take place in your schedule for providing the service that requires direct Internet access.
