Symantec AntiVirus Client Configuration

Description

Symantec AntiVirus can be installed as either an Unmanaged or Managed client. Unmanaged clients generally rely on the user to configure the client settings and virus definitions are obtained using Symantec's LiveUpdate. Managed clients reside in a managed group, settings for each client are controlled by the administrators of the group, virus definitions are also updated centrally and more frequently from the group's primary server.

It is strongly recommended that client systems be part of a Managed group, by default new systems will be made part of the "UniSA Symantec AntiVirus" group who's parent server is 'Software'. This group has been configured so that clients and servers receive new virus definitions every 30 minutes and that the client configuration settings are set correctly.

Software Packages

Managed Client  (member of the 'UniSA Symantec AntiVirus' group)

Recommended as the standard installation. Client systems will be added to the "UniSA Symantec AntiVirus" managed group. Clients will automatically be configured and have the most up to date virus definitions applied. Click on the link above and select "open" when prompted to install on the local system.

Unmanaged Client

Not recommended, except for home PC's or systems that are rarely connected to the University network but regularly connect to the internet. This installation package receives virus definition updates using LiveUpdate from Symantec. Click on the link above to be transferred to the Symantec AntiVirus "Work at Home" web page.

General Upgrading Issues

If you are upgrading a workstation and wish to use different configuration settings (eg moving it from an Unmanaged to a Managed environment) you will need to delete the workstation's LiveUpdate settings before proceeding with the upgrade. This can be done by deleting these settings from the 'All Users' profile; e.g. for a Windows XP system delete the Symantec folder in the following location... C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec
