Important IT Information for new students
Information Technology services for students
Whether you are studying on or off campus, UniSA's online environment provides services and resources available virtually anytime, anywhere.
As a UniSA student, you have access to the following online resources:
- an email account
- an electronic diary
- online teaching materials for all of your courses
- myUniSA - your online one-stop-shop
- more than 1200 computers on campus
- an internet quota (equivalent to viewing 50,000 pages) for use on campus
- a printing quota (equivalent to printing 1100 pages for full time students) for use on campus
If you are worried about using a computer, check out the help available under Training and Resources.
Your username and password
Your username and password are your electronic signature-you can use them to access the University's online resources and services. If you are a new student you'll find them in the letter the University sends to you in January (or February for late offers).
The password allocated to you at the beginning of your program is the first four letters of your family name (add x if it's less than four letters) and the day and month of your date of birth. For example, if your surname is Ng and your date of birth is 17 March, your password will be ngxx1703.
To protect the privacy of your information it is important that you change your password from the default one described above. Your new password must be 6 to 8 character long and cannot start with a number.
If you forget your password contact the IT Help Desk (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 9.00pm) by email at helpdesk@unisa.edu.au or by phoning 25000 (internal phones) or +61 8 8302 5000 (externally). Country or interstate callers can phone 1300 558 654 for the cost of a local call.
You can get further information or log a service request on line at: www.unisa.edu.au/ists/ITHelpDesk
Your email account
The University uses your student email account as the primary method of communication so it is important that you learn how to manage your account and check for messages regularly. You can access your email account from anywhere in the world. Check out the Training and Resources section for help using email.
There are several methods of effectively strong emails and, at the same time, reducing your mailbox load. Important information can be lost or difficult to locate if stored only within your mailbox. Several tips for managing your email are:
- Delete emails from your inbox
- Save attachments to your emails
- Empty your Sent items folder
- Delete email or Calendar items by specific dates
- Empty your Deleted Items folder
- Use Mailbox Cleanup
- Save old emails to a floppy disk or CD
- Set up rules for moving emails
- Use Advanced Find to locate large files

Your Internet and print quota
Every student is allocated an Internet quota for accessing web pages from campus computers and a print quota for printing on campus. You can pay for additional quota if you run out, and check how much you've got left through UniSA (see below).
