Introduction
Blue Plates (BPs) are issued by ISTS to allow University owned equipment to connect to the University network. Equipment purchased from a Designated PC Supplier will come delivered with a Blue Plate, however there are some exceptions where a Blue Plate will need to be issued directly from ISTS. (e.g. a new printer, specialized equipment, etc.).
Note. PCs and Macintosh systems are only to be purchased from UniSA Designated PC Suppliers, if there are any circumstances that the Designated PC Suppliers can not provide the required computer system or systems, prior permission must be obtained from the Director: ISTS or authorised delegate. More information on purchase exemptions is available from the "Computer System Purchase Exemption Procedures" page.
Process
For systems that need to connect to the University network (i.e. require an IP) that did not come from a designated supplier you will need to apply for a Blue Plate. Once your application has been approved you will be notified, your Blue Plate sticker will be mailed to you and an IP will be issued based on your nominated campus. Once you receive it, you will need to place the Blue Plate sticker on your hardware in a prominent place.
Applying for a Blue Plate
To apply for a blue plate you will need to send an e-mail to PC-IP providing the following information:
- User's name: the name of the preferred user of the device or contact name
- Campus, Building, Room: campus, building and room number of device's location
- User’s ORG2 code: the three letter abbreviation of the unit/school of the user
- Suggested DNS name: (org2)(unisa-number).(campus).unisa.edu.au
- System Type: e.g. printer, notebook, etc
- Manufacturer: make and model of the system
- NIC Manufacturer: Network Adaptor manufacturer and model e.g. 3COM 3C905C
- Ethernet address:12 hexadecimal digits e.g. "006097836D48"1
NB: Do not use spaces, hyphens or colons to separate the groups within the Ethernet address. - Subnet: what the machine will be used for - e.g. server, staff, student, printer, services2

1 If the MAC address is incorrect the machine in question will not get an IP.
2 Fixed IP's in the correct subnet range will automatically be allocated to Printers and Servers based on the location provided. Staff and Student machines will be allocated a DHCP address based on which subnet the wall port is configured to use. If a staff or student machine requires a fixed IP address you will need to complete an Internet Access Change Request form.
Further information on how the PC-IP requests are processed is available on the web page: "Extended Information on PC-IP Requests"
Affixing Blue Plates to Hardware
Standards for affixing Blue Plates to UniSA hardware are available in the document "Placement of UniSA Labels" (PDF 22kb).
