How do I configure Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac for backwards compatibility?

To configure Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac for backwards compatibility
please select the desired office program below:
- Start Microsoft Word 2008.
- From the menu at the top choose the Word menu and
select Preferences.

- Select the Save preferences.

- Change the Save Word files as: to be an older word
format like Word 97-2004 (.doc).

- Select OK then Exit from Word.
The process to make Microsoft Word 2008 backwards
compatible is now complete. To complete the process for
Microsoft Excel 2008 and
Microsoft PowerPoint 2008
please continue with the instructions below.
- Start Microsoft Excel 2008.
- From the menu at the top choose the Word menu and
select Preferences.

- From Preferences choose Compatibility preference.

- Select Show All from the top of the Compatibility
dialogue box.

- In the Transition section select Save files
in this format: dropdown menu and select Excel 97-2004
Workbook (.xls)

- Select OK then Exit from Excel.

To complete the process for Microsoft
PowerPoint 2008 please continue with the instructions below.
- Start Microsoft PowerPoint 2008.

- Select the Save tab at the top.

- Select the Save PowerPoint files as: dropdown menu and
select PowerPoint 97-2004 Presentation (.ppt).

- Select OK, then exit PowerPoint.
