Why does IE7 crash when I try to open a shared document from a SharePoint portal web site?

NB: This issue only affects some people running Office 2007 and Office 2003 products concurrently and Internet Explorer 7.

If you try to connect to a Shared Office document on a SharePoint Portal and Internet Explorer closes with the following error message:

 You will need to follow these steps to repair your Office 2007 installation:

  1. Rename the file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 12\OWSSUPP.DLL"   to OWSSUPP.dll.old.

  2. Run the Microsoft Office Diagnostics tool (Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools).  It will take about 30 minutes to run as it needs to run a full repair on Office 2007. 

  3. Reboot (if required).
