1    Introduction

There are three major areas responsible for the management of information technology across the university. These are:

Information Strategy & Technology Services is responsible for:

Cost centres are responsible for information technology services directly used in relation to their activities.  The development, support and resourcing of information technology services in cost centres will be done under university information technology policies, procedures and guidelines.

 

2    Responsibilities of  ISTS

Specific Responsibilities of the Information Strategy & Technology Services Unit are:

2.1 Computer Systems

  • Provision and management of corporate computer systems providing services for the teaching, learning, research and administrative activities of the university.
  • Provision and management of computer facilities in designated computer teaching laboratories supporting the teaching, learning and research activities of the university.
  • Management of designated university wide software licensing and maintenance contracts.
  • Management of specified university wide hardware maintenance contracts.
  • Consultation for cost centres in relation to needs analysis, system selection and system upgrading to ensure cost centre information technology directions are consistent with overall information technology directions within the university.

 

2.2 Data Networks

  • Planning the overall structure of the university data network including:
    • Wide Area Networks protocols and hardware.
    • Local Area Networks protocols and hardware.
    • AARNet and Internet access services.
  • Managing IP (Internet Protocol) addressing for all university users.
  • Developing the physical structure of the university data network.
  • Ensuring the integration of the university data network.
  • Maintaining the performance of the university data network within designated parameters.
  • Provision of advice to university groups who have specialist needs in relation to the university data network.
  • Ensuring that the security of the university data network meets internal and external requirements.
  • Liaison with groups external and internal to the university to ensure that appropriate cooperative activity occurs in relationship to data networking.
  • Management of dial up facilities associated with university computer systems.

 

2.3 Administrative Information Systems

  • Management of designated administrative information systems.
  • Coordinate the development, acquisition and maintenance of computer based administrative information systems for the university.
  • Provision of advice to groups within the university who have specialised system requirements in relation to administrative information.

 

2.4 Telephone Facilities

  • Managing the university PABX and other telephone services.
  • Administering accounts for the university telephone services.
  • Planning for the growth in the use of voice networks and associated services within the university.
  • Negotiations with carriers providing voice services to the university.
  • Management of a telephone Help Desk for the university.
  • Facilitate a range of support and repair services for telephone services.

 

2.5 Help Desk Services

  • Management of a help desk service to provide an initial coordinated point of reference for all information technology advice and fault reporting for designated users within the university.

 

2.6 Electronic mail

  • Maintaining an appropriate registry of electronic mail addresses.
  • Maintaining electronic mail servers for staff and students.

 

2.7 World Wide Web services

  • Providing a facility for the delivery of World Wide Web services for the university.

 

Note:
  • The term ‘management’ in the above context includes planning, installation, ongoing maintenance and the delivery of a service within agreed parameters.

 

3       Responsibilities of cost centres

Specific responsibilities of cost centres are:

3.1 Staff and post graduate research students

  • The provision, maintenance and replacement costs of all information technology hardware, software and networking facilities associated with staff (academic and general) and post graduate research students under the control of the cost centre.
  • The payment of recurrent charges incurred by staff and post graduate research students associated with the cost centre in the use of external voice, data networks and associated services.
  • The support costs associated with the use of information technology services by staff and post graduate research students under the control of the cost centre.

 

3.2 Teaching and learning

  • The provision, maintenance and replacement costs of all information technology hardware, software and local networking facilities associated with teaching and learning designated as the responsibility of the cost centre.
  • The payment of recurrent charges incurred by students associated with the cost centre in the use of external voice, data networks through the use of university information technology facilities.
  • Support of all students associated with the cost centre in using information technology facilities provided by the university.

 

3.3 Research

  • The provision, maintenance and replacement costs of all information technology hardware, software and local networking facilities associated with research designated as the responsibility of the cost centre.
  • The support costs associated with the use of information technology services for research under the control of the cost centre.

 

3.4 Administration

  • The provision, maintenance and replacement costs of all information technology hardware, software and local networking facilities associated with administrative activities of the cost centre.
