Who we are

Led by the defining theme of
sustainable settlements, our research is driven by core areas of energy,
water, agriculture, transport and land-use, and natural and built
environments. As an extension of these core areas our research program
embraces :
-
sustainable energy
-
sustainable planning and construction
-
sustainable transport and land use
-
sustainable engineering design
-
mathematical modelling
-
systems analysis
-
monitoring
-
evaluation and assessment
Sixty academics and support
staff, a dozen adjunct research staff and some 40 postgraduate researchers
in respected research areas came together to carry out
interdisciplinary research that embodies the vision and focus of the
Institute.
They conduct research programs across a
broad spectrum of advanced systems and technologies that are
fundamental to the built and natural environments of our
communities. They have strong national and international
research reputations in the broad area of environmental
sustainability in their individual research disciplines and work
effectively with an extensive range of industry partners. ISST is working
to integrate these capabilities to create new synergies in the delivery of
multi-disciplinary research programs in the general field of sustainability.
Their collaboration in the Institute is seen as the flagship for the University’s research activities in the sustainability area. The many facets of our research is conducted by dedicated staff in the areas of:
-
Agricultural Machinery Research and Design develops farming technologies for Australian conditions. Its expertise covers core science through to the design, construction and evaluation of prototype equipment.
-
Building and Planning Studies provides resources and opportunities for research into the planning, design and development of sustainable human settlements. Priority research areas include carbon-neutral communities, lifetime affordable housing, integrated land use and transport planning, building rating systems, and assessing the impacts of embodies energy on greenhouse gas emissions.
-
Industrial and Applied Mathematics uses sophisticated mathematical systems to solve complex problems faced by industry and society as a whole. It has a strong focus on sustainability through its environmental modelling group.
-
Sustainable Design and Manufacturing provides a strategic focus on applying novel and innovative engineering solutions to productivity improvements and engineering sustainability. The research objectives of this group are, therefore, focused on these two strategic areas.
-
Sustainable Energy tackles the technological and environmental issues related to the use of renewable energy and management of conventional energy. It has developed commercial products, including a roof-integrated solar heating system and a new generation of solar lights, and methodologies for rating and monitoring energy use in housing developments.
-
Transport Systems is recognised internationally as one of Asia-Pacific's top centres for research and education in transport engineering. Its expertise includes intelligent transport systems, demand modelling, network analysis and environmental issues, and has developed computer systems for transport planning and control.
