Dr El-Kamil Tola, from the University of Khartoum, Sudan, on a visiting fellowship from the Grains Research and Development Corporation is spending a 37 week sabbatical in the agricultural machinery R&D area working with Dr Jack Desbiolles on "investigations into the mechanics of angled disc openers for improved residue cutting in zero-till cropping systems".

Associate Professor Takashi Kataoka of the Crop Production Engineering Laboratory at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, visited the agricultural machinery R&D area during 20-24 October 2008 with a view to initiate a collaborative linkage in the areas of precision agriculture and conservation farming techniques.

Dr Philippe Lauret, Associate Professor, Physics Department, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of La Reunion and Vice Deputy Manager of the Laboratory LPBS has arranged to spend his sabbatical, 2 September to 10 February, working with Dr John Boland and Barbara Ridley.

Dr Jacek Krawczyk, Reader, School of Economics and Finance, Victoria University of Wellington, will be working with Professor Filar during his sabbatical 31 August to 8 November to further his research on the subject of different time-scales systems dynamics in the context of environmental sustainability.  During his visit he will give a seminar - details to be provided.

Professor Rosemary Bailey, Professor of Statistics in the School of Mathematical Sciences at Queen Mary, University of London, will be visiting as a guest of Dr Chris Brien at the City West Campus.

Professor Alain Haurie, Professor of Operations Research, University of Geneva Switzerland, visited as a guest of Professors Filar, Gaitsgory and Boland 23 October to 3 November.

Professor Vivek Borkar, School of Technology and Computer Science, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, visited as a guest of Professors Filar and Gaitsgory from 11 October to 1 November.

Professor Jiahua Chen from the University of British Columbia, Canada, visited 10-23 March and worked with Dr Zen Lu on an ARC project.

Professor Naidu from the Idaho State University visited from 23 February to 15 March to undertake collaborative work with Professor Gaitsgory and other academics on the research project Applications of linear programming approach in nonlinear optimal control problems.

Professor Tom Archibald from the University of Edinburgh visited with Julia Piantadosi 24 February to 7 March to work on an IEEE Research Grant.  His research interests are operations management policies for start-up companies; parallel computing and the application of stochastic dynamic programming to reservoir operation; portfolio management; management of multilocation inventory systems; operation of networks of water reservoirs and maintenance models for roads, bridges and buildings.

Professor Jean-Bernard Lasserre, Director of Research at Laascnrs in Toulouse, is an associate member of the Institute of Mathematics of Toulouse.  He will be working with Professor Jerzy Filar and other research staff from February 2008.

Vincent Jezequel from Universite De Bretagne-Sud in France will commence a 5 month work experience placement commencing February 2008.  He will be working closely with Associate Professor John Fielke determining design improvements of selected Horwood Bagshaw machinery components.

2007

Professor Clarice Demetrio from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, visited 29 November 2007 and undertook collaborative research with Dr Chris Brien.  Professor Demetrio also gave a presentation entitled An extended random-effects approach to modelling repeated, over-dispersed count data.

Professor Boris Andrievsky, a leading researcher with the Institute for Problems of Mechanical Engineering of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a Professor at the Baltic State Technical University.  He gave a presentation entitled An adaptive synchronisation approach to signal transmissions based on modulation of chaotic signal, and worked closely with Professor Vladimir Gaitsgory and other research staff.

Professor Ran Libeskind-Hadas, Department of Computer Science, Harvey Mudd College, California, and a Visiting Scholar, School of Information Technology, University of Sydney visited the Institute during November.  Whilst here he worked closely with Dr Lesley Ward and gave a presentation entitled How to quickly pack multiple knapsacks using a knife.

Professor Alexander Fradkov, Head of the Laboratory of Complex Systems Control of the Institute for the Problems of Mechanical Engineering of Russian Academic of Sciences visited 28 November.  Whilst here he gave a presentation entitled Speed-gradient-entropy modelling of non-stationary processes.

During November Professor Sumon Sakolchai (President), Associate Professor Somnuk Teerakulpisut (Dean of engineering) and Assistant Professor Pongrid Klungboonkrong (Deputy Director, Sustainable Infrastructure Research and Development Centre) from the Khon Kaen University, Thailand, visited ISST.

Professor Jerzy Filar was successful in gaining International Research Visitor fund  to support  Professor  Dominique  Haughton (Bentley College, Boston) to work  with himself, Associate  Professor Irene Hudson and  Dr John Boland in March 2007. Dominique brought  with her a new  UniSA off-shore  PhD student,  Phong,  who will  be supervised  by Irene and John on multilevel statistics. This collaboration promises to consolidate  links  with Vietnam and Boston (Business)
