Monday 26th
Hi Team,
Your challenge on Wednesday will involve you in organising yourselves into an efficient
working group that can budget time as well as making decisions that produce the goods! The
GOODS? Cant say just yet. You will build a model that must work
i.e. achieve its objectives. You will need someone who can read/scan printed matter
quickly, and pick the eyes out of it. Not that there needs to be a lot of book
reading because there will also be an on online computer with a list of the appropriate
web sites. So someone needs to be slick at that too. Two hours will go pretty quickly. You
will need to be good with a Stanley knife
safe too, and diligent with recording
decisions on paper. And by the way you will be filmed for the evening presentation at the
Hypothetical where the prizes will be handed out. Better see if your folks can take you to
that.
Now the really hard bit will be controlling the distractions but thats
life! Passers by will want to know what you are doing, so you will need to be clear on
that. The media will want to push you around to get good shots and maybe interview you.
And then there will be the judges. Now they will need to be handled carefully!! (If
you play your cards right you will pick up clues from them their body languages
& their questions/interest) Of course you will have an adult with you from school but
they wont be allowed to help! I suggest you appoint a PR person from the team.
So, think about yourselves in the middle of Rundle Mall with people & cameras
peering at you in your conference T-shirts (Black). No I dont mean for you to worry
about makeup, but I do want you to think about what image (of yourselves & your
school) you will portray. Will you bring a school banner? How will you hold that up? I
will provide a carpet big enough for the four of you to sit on and a table and the
computer
.and of course the kit with the modeling materials. Solar stuff obviously.
Timing? Well you have to arrive at the Energy SA caravan at the Gawler Place
intersection by 9.30am to collect & put on your Bringing Solar down to
Earth T-shirts. Which means you will need sun-block &/or hats, water, lunch etc.
Oh and you have to write down your decisions for the judges so bring a pencil, a rubber
& a notepad. By 10am you must be in position, checked your computer and ready
to start. At 12noon you will be stopped and over the next 15 mins a judge will interview
you & examine your model. Points will be awarded all through the morning and on the
final product, including the report. The public will want a look too. Lunchtime &
clean up time.
At 12.30pm you will carry your model down to the Expo at the new Convention Centre to
go on display. The judges will have a closer look there! You will then be able to look at
the Expo with its commercial & working displays, solar cars, model solar boats,
stills, Light/House exhibition etc. What happens from there depends on your schools
arrangements. You might want a ride on the solar boat on the Torrens.
From 4-6pm there is a Speakers Corner happening near your models. This is aimed at the
adult public but you are welcome to stay and listen & ask questions.
The presentation of prizes to all teams that the judges feel have succeeded in
achieving the objectives of the game will happen at 6pm as the introduction to the
Hypothetical Will the Sun Provide in the Convention Centre Hall, a
debate with a number of leading figures in the world of solar energy. You & your folks
can attend that from 6-7.30pm.
The prizes? Not saying! Read more here tomorrow
