Hansuk Choi, South Korea

Hansuk ChoiUniSA’s “well-organized program, high standard of professional staff and good facilities” was a winning combination for Korean nursing student Hansuk Choi who undertook ARNTP; a professional certificate program offered by the University of South Australia School of Nursing & Midwifery with the Centre for English Language at UniSA (CELUSA). It is designed for overseas trained nurses whose first language is not English.

The program includes three days orientation which Hansuk found very helpful. “During orientation days, the staff gave us information about transportation, accommodation and some service facilities in Adelaide. Also, they informed us about the course outline and various services of UniSA such as the library, learning connection and security services”. Hansuk found the library facilities particularly convenient: “The study room in the library is very useful for me. I usually use the room for study group with my friends”.

The program is only 24 weeks in duration but includes English classes, Nursing classes and a clinical practicum. Hansuk visited a Rehabilitation hospital, interviewed the staff and wrote a report about the hospital’s facilities, funding and services, as well as the Australian health system. “It was very good assignment for me” Hansuk remarks.

Hansuk found Adelaide the perfect study environment “[Adelaide] is a really good environment for studying, compared with other states…very quiet and clean. Also, [international students] can meet the western people more easily because of the small number of Asian people in here.” The cost of living was another plus compared to other cities in Australia as well as student concessions for such things as transport and cinema tickets.

Hansuk chose to live in share accommodation in the city close to the University. “Adelaide has many good things for living. I can get around the city easily with the free bus and tram services. Additionally, if I go to the Central Market, I can access cheap fruits, vegetables and various foods.” Hansuk also found “most local people are very friendly. I go to church every weekend and I met many local people there.”

Hansuk would recommend UniSA to other Korean students but advises “they should prepare for academic English study now, because they may face difficulties with the language and the different education system here”. ”The most important thing I would say is this University has a well-organized program, high standard of professional staff and good facilities.”
