Bhavika Patel is studying the Masters in Environmental
Management and Sustainability at the City East and Mawson Lakes
campuses. She chose UniSA because it had the most suitable
program for her areas of interest, the courses she is studying
are relevant and challenging and the University is well
resourced.

‘My orientation experience was really good. It provided an opportunity for me to meet other new students and share our ideas and experiences. My typical day at Uni starts with a lecture and a cup of coffee. During the breaks and after the lecture I discuss the topic with other students and the lecturer or tutor. I then usually go to the library or computer pool to do some research or work on an assignment. I often like to do lunch with some Uni friends as well as it’s always good to mix business with pleasure. The thing I’ve enjoyed most about studying at UniSA is the new and very different teaching and learning pattern. I have really had to develop myself to become an independent thinker and not just repeat knowledge (facts) I’ve learnt from a book. I am focussing on water quality and reuse during my studies. My current research project is on the ‘Removal of Pharmaceutical Compounds Using a Nanofiltration Membrane’. As water is such a scare resource, I am excited to be undertaking important research and development and delivering valuable information in the field of water quality and treatment. I am really happy that my program includes a research project because it is providing me with a ‘hands on’ opportunity to work in a research setting which will assist me in my future career goals. After gaining some work experience in Australia when I graduate I would like to return to my country and become part of the development of the area of water quality and reuse using the knowledge I’ve gained from studying at UniSA’.
Furthermore, Bhavika had heard that Adelaide was a beautiful and affordable city to live in. ‘I am renting a house with my family that is close to the city centre but also within easy reach of the Mawson Lakes campus. It is really affordable, especially when I compare it to rental prices in other Australian cities. Adelaide is easy to get around and I have found it easy to meet new people, make lots of friends and enjoy a multicultural experience. I really enjoy shopping in Rundle Mall, summer evenings at the beach and Saturday nights out in the city. When I came to Adelaide I was really challenged by the difference in the foods we eat, but now I am enjoying the new tastes that I’ve found in South Australian food’.
‘If I could give students thinking about studying at UniSA a piece of advice it would be to enjoy your studies and to utilise your UniSA professors and fellow students to enrich your learning experience. And remember to get into the local culture as it will really enrich your whole experience’.
