Abhishek Shaw

Abhishek Shaw is a graduate of the Master of Business Accountancy program at City West campus.

A reputation for strong engagement with industry and a personalised approach encouraged Abhishek to choose the University of South Australia.  He made the right choice!  After completing his degree (and working in the University’s Division of Business as a Student Engagement Officer) Abhishek has been selected by one of the big four accounting firms for a graduate position in Assurance and Audit. “This was my aim when I started studying”.

“One of the best things about the Master of Business Accountancy is that you build a sense of responsibility and take charge of your own life. The program pushes you out of your comfort zone to perform well and at the same time provides you with the required support needed to be successful.  There are also a lot of university supported opportunities to develop as a professional.”

Support is available from Orientation (before beginning formal classes) through to the completion of your degree. “The Orientation was good because we got to know about Campus Central and the Learning and Teaching Unit, where support and help are offered to students, however most importantly I was introduced to some very useful sessions on careers, visa regulations, accommodation, library and referencing. It was during Orientation that I met other new students who I became good friends with. During the last year of my degree I attended a numerous number of workshops and events held by the university with regards to career development (e.g. Network Now, International Careers Day, Professional Association Sessions, etc). I also received a lot of advice from the career advisors in the Division of Business”.

A typical University day for Abhishek was busy, combining study and catching up with friends. “My typical day at uni would be to arrive for a lecture and then meet up with friends after the lecture. If we had a tutorial then I would go on to that and have some good discussions along with my class mates and get some new ideas. Then I would have some lunch on campus and finish the day off with some on my own studies in the library“.

Adelaide has a reputation as a quiet, safe place where students are welcome. For Abhishek, the best things about being a student in Adelaide are “it’s safe and cheap and people are friendly and if one builds some contacts then you seem to bump into each other in the city very often. And it’s so clean and you can rely on the police”.

“Adelaide has been a great place for me.  It’s got all of the facilities of a big city, without the crowd and the in-a-rush attitude of city dwellers. You can be at the beautiful beaches or the scenic hills in just 20 minutes. The space around the city is unbelievable with so many parks. It’s just a perfect place for kids and people who like nature.”

This is quite a contrast with Abhishek’s home city of Calcutta. “Calcutta is very big, with a lot of people and Adelaide is really different. I like Adelaide because it’s a lot cleaner and quieter. Even though I miss the street food of Calcutta I’ve started cooking at home  a lot more which has helped me become more independent“.

Abhishek has some words of advice for other students considering study at UniSA. “I would suggest you take every chance to improve your spoken and written English, attend the workshops on career preparation offered by UniSA and learn how to professionally network. Also try and make friends with the locals as well as your Indian friends and adapt a bit to the lifestyle here”.

And finally, “enjoy your time here in Adelaide; it could be the best few years of your life!”
