Minors : Furniture design and Exhibition design
In
Levels 2 and 3 of the Interior Architecture Program at the Louis
Laybourne Smith School, students have the option to select one of two
minor streams of study offered in furniture design and exhibition
design:
Furniture design:
Form, scale, object,
detailing, folding, materiality, colour and texture, ergonomics,
process, production and technology.
Students may elect to undertake a minor in Furniture Design within the
Bachelor of Interior Architecture. The furniture design minor requires
students to undertake a minimum of 18 units of furniture design courses
in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of their programme.
Workplacement:
In addition, students are encouraged to undertake compulsory workplacement during 2nd and 3rd year within the furniture design field. Furniture design workplacements are available from the Jam Factory, various furniture and joinery manufacturers, a number of design consultancies and that specialise in furniture projects and with furniture designers.
Masterclasses:
Furniture minor
students are awarded priority places in the annual Furniture Design
Masterclass that runs during the winter break. Places in these intense
3-day Masterclass studios are limited to 20 students with priority given
to minor stream students and upper level students. The Masterclasses are
run by nationally and internationally renowned exhibition design
practitioners who present professionally relevant and challenging
project briefs.
Exhibition design:
Display, narrative, wayfinding, interpretation, education, technology, multi-media,
interactivity, entertainment, installation, museum culture and
programme.
Students may elect to undertake a minor in Exhibition Design within the
Bachelor of Interior Architecture. The exhibition design minor requires
students to undertake a minimum of 18 units of exhibition design courses
in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year of their programme.

Exhibition design workplacements are available from the South Australian Museum, various galleries and exhibition spaces, and with a number of design consultancies that specialise in exhibition projects.
