Masterclass 2007 - Material, Form and Space Continuum with George Verghese - Associate Head of School, Design at UTS--Enter Content here--

“… to me the material really is the starting point of the story.” Eva Jiricna in Design in Mind by Lawson, B.

The design of interior spaces encompasses many factors from site conditions, functional relationships, behavioural relationships, structural form, symbolic, and sensory responses. The relationship of materials to all these factors are essential in our design thinking, as material influences and is influenced by all of these factors. As designers we are charged with the responsibility to encourage and direct change. We are change agents. Using the increasingly varied, and exciting new developments in material technology, this masterclass will examine how the junction of materials could form a strategy for form development. The class will explore the various paradigms of joining and attaching through a systematic and clear manner. Using this knowledge further exploration will take the micro analysis of form and extrapolate towards a generation of a macro form to embody spatial experiences for the human body. These will then become part of an arsenal of design strategies to be used in designing spaces for future projects. The additional outcome will be a deeper understanding of the relationship of material and form to space and how they are all part of a design continuum. George Verghese

Over two days, students were encouraged to

George Vergheser and masterclass studentsThink of the built environment as a series of materials connected together forming part of a building system

Selection of Masterclass drawingsExplore an alternate approach to design that moves from the micro to the macro view.

Explore the system of connections between materials and the paradigms for joining them together.

Tasks
The examination of the joining paradigm will take the form of exploratory studies through drawing and models of one paradigm/joint system.

George Verghese masterclassThe exploration will include a systematic alteration of scale, arrangement, number, and form geometry.

Using the new material selected, explore the continuum of material/form and space by examining one of the joint studies as the initiator of the spatial outcome.

This will result in the micro spatial arrangements giving life to the macro spatial arrangements.
